Fall Family Camping Trip

  • What: Pack Family Fall Camping Trip - SIGN UP NOW!
  • When: Friday, October 7-Sunday, October 9, 2016 (come for all or part - you can even just come for the day Saturday)
  • Where: Greenbelt National Park - Loop C,  6565 Greenbelt Road Greenbelt, Maryland 20770. Just twelve miles from Washington, DC, located in suburban Greenbelt, Maryland - that's a 15 minute drive from Silver Spring!

    ​Then bring this permission form with you to the park (also has FAQs.)   
  • Cost: $25 flat fee per family, any amount of time, payable when you arrive
 
Want to help? We are looking for volunteers to lead specific activities on this trip – fire marshall, hike, kickball game, grocery shop, collect money and forms as people arrive.  Please contact Celeste Raker Dillen (c.rakerdillen @ gmail.com) to volunteer.

What to Bring: Tent, sleeping bags, mess kit, air mattress or other sleeping pad, tarp, change of clothes, toiletries, snacks/drinks to share, Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, outdoor sports equipment to share. 

Schedule:

Friday 
  • 5 pm -6:30 pm  - pitch tents while it’s still light out
    bring your own dinner, enjoy free time in the park, spend the night
 
  • 10:00 Hike - we'll start the hike from Loop C then. Starting at 9:30 we can do some orientation (buddy system, leave no trace, Celeste has some "hiking bingo" cards). We'll be back at the campsite by 11:30. (Some of the Bears need to leave then). 
  • 5:30 Dinner - Dinner prep should start at 4:00; dinner bell at 5:30, cleanup can be done by 6:45. 
  • 7:30 Campfire. Let's try to have the campfire 7:30 - 8:30. Some families will go home after the campfire, and it takes a while after the campfire for everyone to settle down. 

Saturday 
  • 7-9 am breakfast - bring your own continental breakfast
  • 10-11:30 am - pack hike or geocaching
  • 11:30 am–1 pm lunch - Wolves in charge
  • 1-3 pm - Dens have individual activities (planned by den leaders, may fulfill some den badge requirements)
  • 3 pm  - snack
  • 3:30-5:30 pm late afternoon Pack games - kickball or other sport
  • 4:00 pm (Bears only) - dinner prep start
  • 5:30-7:30 pm dinner - Bears in charge
  • 7:30 pm  - Campfire 
  • 9 pm - Quiet time
  • 10 pm  - Lights out

Sunday
  • Until 7:30 am – Quiet time
  • 7:30-9 am breakfast - Arrows and Weblos in charge
  • 9:15 am  - Closing Reflections
  • free time - in the park
  • 11 am  - Pack up​

Rain plan: Should the trip need to be canceled or postponed due to weather, messages will arrive via the listserve and will also be sent to those who are on the sign up spread sheet.  Note: the weather forecast is dicey for this weekend. Strong chance of showers (not storms) Saturday morning, clearing up in the afternoon. Let's assume the best for now.
