Anytime Events


Pack Hikes​ - Any time, all year
1 to 3 hour informal hikes, peferrably each month for whomever wants to attend. Families and scouts meet at a designated time and parking area to enjoy the outdoors.
​Need: Anyone can suggest/organize a hike
  • Communicate via listserve the time, location and basic info about the trail (including short option for younger hikers.)
  • Meet participants at the meet up location and provide trail info/map; lead the hike​

Fall Events


​Join Scouting Night - Sept
Recruiting event for new scouts: Cubmaster & Leaders hand out welcome letter/calendar, present, and facilitate Q&As . Volunteers organize concurrent scout activity.
Need: Pack Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Coordinate with BSA White Oak District to make flyers, reserve rooms at SCES and HVES
  • Create presentation and agenda
  • Plan and run scout activity

​Popcorn Fundraiser - Sept thru Nov
Pack 275 main fundraiser: Scouts sell popcorn in Oct door to door and at store booths - to be delivered in November.
Need: a Popcorn Kernel to
  • Organize all popcorn logistics (setting pack plan, ordering and distributing popcorn to scouts, collecting money, ordering and delivering prizes)

Fall Family Campout - Sept or Oct
What: A Pack campout at local campground (families invited). Families can attend for the day, or one or two nights. Campfire Saturday night, den-oriented activities (badge work) and some pack-wide activities.
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Reserve campsites
  • Sign up families, collect payment
  • Plan agenda with leadership
  • Solicit volunteers (food purchase/prep, scout activities, etc)

Scouting for food (week 1) - Oct or Nov
A Pack charity activity to collect food for local food banks. 60-90 minutes delivering donation bags on prescribed routes near the CCC church.
Need: Parent Volunteers to
  • Get collection bags (usually via district roundtable)
  • Coordinate teams for delivery (on site)
  • Prepare and hand out delivery route maps and donation bags at CCC to teams

Scouting for food (week 2) - Oct or Nov
60-90 minutes of collecting filled donation bags (delivered in week 1) on prescribed routes near the CCC church. Then sorting donated goods and 2-3 volunteers deliver to food banks.
Need: Parent Volunteers to
  • Prepare and hand out collection routes at CCC
  • Coordinate teams for pick-up (on site)
  • Oversee food collection and sorting
  • Coordinate delivery to food banks

Thanksgiving Parade - Oct thru Nov
March in Downtown Silver Spring Thanksgiving parade (Great way to donate leftover Halloween candy!)
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Leaders submit application for parade participation by September
  • Organize any float/banner/flag preparation
  • Organize logistics before and on parade day (meet up location, time, etc)

Winter Events


Festival of Faith and Culture - Nov thru Dec
The December pack meeting, highlighting traditions of diverse faiths and cultures
Need: Parent Volunteers to
  • Solicit volunteers to plan and run tables for diverse faiths/cultures (doesn"t have to be yours)
  • Coordinate program with Cubmaster

Battleship NJ Overnight - Late Fall (logistics), Spring (event)
Not held every year:
An overnight for scout/parent on a real battleship in Philadelphia. Scouts sleep in bunks, eat in mess hall and tour the ship.

Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Pick date and coordinate with battleship and pack
  • Sign up families, collect payment
  • Coordinate logistics for attendees at overnight

Port Discovery Overnight - Late Fall (logistics), Winter (event)
Not held every year. A Lock-in overnight for scouts at Port Discovery children"s museum in Baltimore. Programming and free play from 7-11 pm, including snack and Sunday breakfast

  • Identify interested families, sign up with Port Discovery
  • Collect payment from participants
  • Coordinate on site as needed (sleeping location, schedule, etc.)

Ski Trip - Late Fall (logistics), Winter (event)
Family day trip to a local ski resort with discounted tickets.
Need: Parent Volunteers to
  • Pick date and ski resort, coordinate discount with ski resort
  • Sign up families, collect payment
  • Coordinate logistics on trip (meet up times/locations, etc.)

Scout Sabbath - Feb
Scouts attend Friday night Shabbat service at local temple
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Pick date and coordinate with Temple and Pack

Scouts attend Sunday morning CCC service where Scout and/or leader gives brief remarks during service.

Pinewood Derby - Winter thru Spring
Scouts design and build cars from pinewood derby kits, then race them at the derby. Alumni/families also can design/race cars. Winners at each Den level represent pack at district competition.
Need: Pinewood Derby Master to
  • Manage overall schedule, coordinates volunteers and schedules for specific positions (see below)
  • Coordinate race day w/church
  • Distribute rules to participants, resolves issues
  • Coordinate ordering/distribution of car kits
  • Oversee track and computer setup
  • Help Cubmaster create awards for each participant

Pack Derby Build @ CCC - Jan/Feb
Scouts/families work on their cars together at CCC (not painting).
Families with tools can bring to share

Scouts/families work on their cars at Riderwood retirement home woodshop with help of residents (woodcraft only - no painting).

  • Sign up families to attend (by time block)

Blue & Gold Banquet - Winter (logistics), Feb or Mar (event)
Banquet dinner for pack and families with skits and fellowship, skits, cake contest(!!) and Scout/Volunteer Recognition.

  • Pick date and coordinate with church/location and Pack
  • Sign up families to attend and to volunteer
  • Order food and decorations
  • On site logistics facilitation (money collection, set up/tear down, schedule etc.)

Spring Events


Derby Check-In - Mar or April
Scouts/families check in their cars, ensuring they meet specifications/rules
Need: Derby Master & Parent Volunteers to
  • Organize schedule and volunteers
  • Set up "fix-it" table for last minute changes
  • Set up collection table (with rules), collect cars

Derby Race Day - Mar or Apr
Scouts/families race their cars in heats on the Pack provided track.
Need: Derby Master & Parent Volunteers
To Coordinate and fill various positions for:
  • Concessions
  • Track set up
  • Audience setup
  • Arrange for BSA Scouts to help with running the race

Bridging Ceremony / Reception - Late Spring
A Pack meeting night ceremony for Arrows of Light scouts (5th grade) graduating from Pack 275 to BSA Scout troop. Includes a small reception for family members after ceremony.
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Coordinate with troops receiving scouts
  • Organize small reception after meeting

Camp Snyder - April
Overnight family campout at local scout camp in Haymarket, VA. Facilities includes: platform tents, mess hall meals, camp-organized activities.
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Pick date and coordinate with Snyder and Pack
  • Sign up families, collect payment
  • On site logistics facilitation as needed

Raingutter Regatta - May or June
Informal recruitment event for future scouts: Scouts design and build boats from simple kits, then race them in inflatable "rain gutter" water tracks propelling them with air blown through straws. Alumni and families can also participate, design and race boats.
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Coordinate ordering/distribution of boat kits
  • Pick date and location (reserve if needed) with Pack
  • Setup tables, gutters, water etc on race day
  • Coordinate food (hot dogs, S'mores, etc.) if desired

Solomons Island Family Camp Out - Spring (logistics) - June (event)
End of year campout at Solomons Island NRC (Naval Recreation Center). Families are invited to attend for day, or one or two nights. Facilities include: fishing, boating, beach, pool, mini-golf, bike riding, etc. Scouts get new books, scarves and hats for their next rank at campfire promotion ceremony.

  • Reserve campsites (MUST be done by active military)
  • Plan agenda with leadership
  • Sign up families, collect payment
  • Solicit volunteers (food purchase/prep, scout activities, etc)
  • On-site host must arrive first as 'sponsor' to hand out wrist bands, assign campsites, etc.

Summer Events


Summer Day Camps - Spring (logistics) - Summer (events)
Day camps of scout-oriented activities (week long, no overnights) in local DC area organized by BSA Districts.
Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Identify interested families, collect payment from participants
  • Sign up with district on behalf of all participating scouts/families
  • Coordinate 'den walkers' to accompany kids during each day

Goshen Scout Camp - Spring (logistics) - July (event)
Weeklong overnight camp for Webelos/Arrows at Goshen, WV
Parents chaperone scouts, camp organizes activities and all meals in mess hall

Need: Leaders & Parent Volunteers to
  • Pick and coordinate date with Goshen and Webelos/ AOL den leaders (usually July 4th week)
  • Sign up scouts/families, collect payment
  • Coordinate transportation/carpooling
  • Coordinate on-site schedule for volunteer parent chaperone

Hersheypark Family Camping - Jun (logistics) and Jul or Aug (event)
Family organized weekend campout at Hesheypark Campgroud Resort and Amusement Park with group rate package including campsite, camp store, bathhouse, pool, shuttle service, Hersheypark Fri. night preview entrance  and Sat. early start access, free meal ticket, & a camp patch!
Need: Parent lead and Volunteers to
  • Identify interested families and coordinate dates with Hershypark 
  • Sign up scouts/families, collect payment
  • Coordinate campground arrivals, setup, Camp & Play ticket handouts
  • Coordinate meal plans/logistics
