Riderwood Derby BuildPlease follow links or listed contacts for more information.
The scouts and their families work on their kits together at Riderwood Senior Living, building (but not painting) cars with highly skilled retired residents in an amazing wood shop. All tools are provided, as well as expert mentoring. You must sign up for this event - space is limited. Chaperones are required. Parking can be challenging at Riderwood so carpooling to the event is not a bad idea. We highly recommend your scout come with a car design clearly in mind - drawings are a big help to show the residents. There’s a lot of on-line advice about engineering your car to be as fast as possible. There are also weight kits and other accessories available at stores like Strosniders Hardware. Being the fastest is not the only way to win, though. Other awards are also given out, including the best appearance, best den chief’s car, and best parent’s car. All who participate at the pack level receive a certificate. The Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular Cub Scout activities. The scouts design and build cars from pinewood derby kits that the pack provides, then race them at the Pack Derby Race. Alumni and families also can design and race cars. Winners at each Den level represent pack at District Competition. SIGN UP HERE Contacts:
Directions: Short Version of Directions ----------------------------------------------------- 1.) Go to Riderwood Senior Community, 3140 Gracefield Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904 2.) Enter through Security Gate where you are expected. 3.) Park at far end of Lot D 4.) Enter at canopy marked "Charles Terrace 3122" Long Version of Directions ----------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the Riderwood Wood Shop! Getting here ought to be pretty simple. Your GPS will probably bring you to the intersection of Plum Orchard and Gracefield Roads. All of the building at Riderwood have a Gracefeld Road addresses but there are no buildings on Gracefield Road. All that is on Gracefeild is the entrance to Riderwood. That entrance is the continuation of Plum Orchard. So, continue on the entrance road and you will come to the guard’s shack. The guards will be altered to your coming. Continue past the guard’s shack a short way to the first stop sign and turn right. The toad curves a bit and you’ll come up to another stop sign. Continue through it and you will come up to Parking Lot D on your left. Keep going and you will immediately come up to Parking Lot E also on your left. On the right side of the road, you will see a lot of empty parking spots (perpendicular to the road) and marked Employee Parking. They’re empty because it’s Saturday. You can park in any one of those but you should go as far down the road as you can. We’ll try have someone there directing you and we’ll have directional signs along the way. When you get out of your car continue walking down the road a short way. The road makes a 90 degree turn and you’ll see on your right a building entrance with a canopy marked Charles Terrace 3122. There will be someone there waiting to let you in (it’s a locked door). It would be nice if the one o’clock and the two o’clock crowds got there as close as reasonably possible to their scheduled time so that the person sitting there doesn’t have to sit there doing nothing for too long. We hope you have a pleasant visit and we plan on having a good time ourselves. |
